Robust or High Physical Support: What's the Difference?
Two of the four SDA design categories, built for very different needs. Your NDIS plan names the one you're funded for.
The Short Answer
Robust homes are built to be very hard to damage and to keep everyone safe, for people with complex behaviours. High Physical Support homes have the highest level of physical access, for people with the most significant physical and medical support needs.
Robust
Built to take heavy use and be very hard to damage, using durable but unobtrusive materials. The aim is to reduce the chance of injury and keep noise from carrying to neighbours: secure, without feeling institutional.
- Suits people who have complex behaviours that may cause harm to themselves, others or property.
- Typically includes reinforced wall linings and fixtures, laminated or toughened glazing, acoustic treatment to limit neighbourhood disturbance, and secure external areas with safe egress.
Some of our Robust homes are our Super Robust build, our own higher specification. It is not a separate NDIS design category. See our Robust homes
High Physical Support
The highest level of physical access provision, designed around participants who need substantial daily assistance and have significant medical support needs alongside it.
- Suits people who have the most significant physical and medical support needs.
- Typically includes ceiling hoist provision, emergency backup power, emergency communication provision, and height-adjustable joinery and benches.
The Other Two Categories
Fully Accessible homes have a high level of physical access throughout, for people with significant physical impairment who move independently. Improved Liveability homes are calmer, clearer environments for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairment. All four categories explained
Which Am I Funded For?
Your plan states it. If you're not sure, send us your plan and we'll check. The categories describe how the building is constructed, not how much help you receive; that's funded separately, usually as SIL.
