SUPER ROBUST

Super Robust SDA

When the house can cope, the placement holds.

We take Robust SDA homes and upgrade them past the minimum standard.

Most placements don't break down because of the participant. They break down because the building couldn't absorb a hard day, and everything after that became a problem — repair costs, incident reports, a provider losing patience, and eventually a participant moving again.

Robust is a funded design category with a minimum standard. Meeting the minimum is not the same as building for the person who actually needs it.

Super Robust single-participant homes:

Melton South AVAILABLE NOW

One participant per home. For participants who don't do well sharing, sole occupancy isn't a luxury — it's usually the thing that makes the placement survivable.

The worked example: 19 Glenbrook Drive, Wyndham Vale

This home is tenanted. It's here to show what the work involves.

A standard Robust home, upgraded across twelve items. Each one exists to take a specific failure point off the table.

  • 6mm polycarbonate window protection — Windows stop being a breakage risk, and stop being a reason to restrict access to a room
  • Painted 9mm villa board wall covering, 2.4m high — Walls take impact without a trade out every few weeks
  • Solid blockboard door with steel door jamb — Doors hold
  • Second solid blockboard door — The other place that matters
  • Kitchen dividing wall — The kitchen closes when it needs to, without locking down the whole house
  • Internal paling fencing — The yard stays private and usable
  • 300mm fence extension — Removes the obvious climb point
  • Security screen swinging door — An open door and fresh air without a safety trade-off
  • Security screen sliding door — Same, on the main living access
  • Window security screen — Ventilation without risk
  • Pull handle installation — Hardware chosen for the participant, not standard rental fittings
  • Velcro block-out blinds — Light and sleep controlled properly, and no cords

What that adds up to

Not a facility. That's the part people expect to be the trade-off, and it isn't.

Every item above was chosen so it disappears into the house. The point of a stronger building is a less restricted person — when the walls, windows and doors can cope, you need fewer rules, fewer locked doors and fewer interventions around the participant living there.

That's the argument, and the video is the evidence.

What "Super Robust" actually means

It's our term, not the NDIS's.

The four funded SDA design categories are Improved Liveability, Fully Accessible, Robust and High Physical Support. Super Robust isn't a fifth category and doesn't change what a participant's plan pays.

What it means is: a Robust-category home, built past the minimum for that category, with the upgrades above. Participant funding is unaffected. Enrolment is unaffected. The building is simply harder to break.

We call it something because it's a real difference and it needed a name — not because it's a separate funding stream.

Who these homes suit

Likely a fit if the participant:

  • Has Robust SDA in their plan
  • Has had a placement end over property damage or incidents
  • Does better living on their own
  • Needs overnight support on site
  • Benefits from clear zoning and somewhere to reset

Common questions

Can we visit before deciding?

Yes — you're welcome to walk through any of the homes that are currently available. 19 Glenbrook is tenanted so that one can't be visited, but the same upgrade work has been done to the homes that are vacant. We'll arrange a walkthrough once we've talked through the participant's needs.

Is 19 Glenbrook available?

No — it's tenanted, so it isn't available to visit either. It's on this page because it's the clearest record we have of what a Super Robust conversion involves. The homes listed above have had the same work done, and those you can walk through.

What does it cost the participant?

SDA payments come from the participant's Robust SDA funding, plus the standard reasonable rent contribution. No upfront fees to the participant, the coordinator or the provider.

Will it feel institutional?

No, and that's the point of doing the work properly. Watch the walkthrough and judge for yourself.

What if none of these are right?

We'll say so. We manage over 100 SDA properties across Australia, so if these three aren't the fit, we'll tell you what else is coming up.

Who are Necessity Housing?

A family-run SDA provider, seven years in the sector, managing over 100 properties nationally. No upfront fees.
