A High Physical Support Home Built for Comfort and Choice

3 Participant Bedrooms | Private Ensuites | Dedicated OOA Room | Accessible Kitchen | Rear Deck and Ramp

90 Mercer Street, Harkness is a purpose-built single-storey SDA home designed under the High Physical Support design category. It has been created for three participants, with each participant having their own bedroom and private ensuite, plus a dedicated On-site Overnight Assistance room for support staff.

This home is designed for people who need a higher level of physical accessibility, while still wanting a place that feels welcoming, settled and personal. The layout gives participants their own private spaces, a generous shared living zone, an accessible kitchen, a separate laundry, garage, front porch, rear deck and ramp access.

The home supports privacy, independence and practical support delivery. Each participant has a room they can make their own, while the shared living and dining area gives everyone a comfortable place to come together for meals, visitors and everyday routines.

Shared Living That Feels Open and Easy

A Comfortable Main Area for Daily Routines

The main living, meals and kitchen area is a spacious shared zone positioned to make daily life feel connected and easy. It gives participants enough room to move, relax, spend time with others and receive support without the space feeling crowded.

The living and dining area connects directly with the kitchen, helping participants stay involved in everyday activities such as preparing food, sharing meals or spending time with visitors. The connection to the rear deck also helps the home feel more open, with indoor and outdoor spaces working together.

This part of the home is designed to feel practical but not clinical. It offers the openness needed for mobility and support, while still feeling like a proper living room where people can unwind, socialise and feel at home.

A Kitchen Made for Participation

Accessible, Practical and Connected to the Home

The kitchen is designed to support High Physical Support accessibility requirements while remaining part of the everyday living space. It includes accessible circulation, suitable appliance placement, a drawer-style dishwasher, accessible tapware, wheelchair-accessible pantry provision and an adjustable benchtop surface.

This makes the kitchen more usable for participants who want to be involved in daily routines. Whether someone is preparing a drink, helping with a meal or simply spending time nearby while others cook, the kitchen is positioned to support inclusion and independence.

Its location beside the shared living and meals area also makes it easier for support staff to assist without separating participants from the activity of the home.

Three Private Participant Suites

Personal Space, Ensuite Access and Built-In Storage

90 Mercer Street includes three participant bedrooms, each designed as a proper private space rather than an adapted room. The bedrooms are well-sized, with room for personal furniture, mobility circulation and day-to-day support needs.

Each participant bedroom includes its own private ensuite and robe. This is a major benefit for shared living, because it gives every participant their own bathroom access, storage and personal routine. Participants can live together while still having the dignity and privacy of a personal suite.

The bedrooms are designed to support High Physical Support requirements, including space for bed circulation, accessible robe use, power provision and future ceiling hoist capability. This helps the home remain suitable as participant needs change over time.

Private Ensuites That Support Daily Care

Bathrooms Designed for Access, Safety and Dignity

Each participant has direct access to a private ensuite, which helps make personal care routines more comfortable and predictable. The ensuites are designed to support accessibility, privacy and safe support delivery.

The bathroom design includes step-free shower access, accessible sanitary layouts, slip-resistant flooring and wall reinforcement for future support fittings. These features help create bathrooms that are easier to use, easier to support in and better suited to long-term High Physical Support needs.

Having a private ensuite for each participant also reduces pressure on shared spaces. It allows each person to maintain their own routine, which is especially important in a shared SDA home.

Support Close By When It Is Needed

Dedicated OOA Space for Overnight Assistance

The home includes a dedicated Onsite Overnight Assistance room at the front of the property. This gives support staff a clear space within the home while keeping participant bedrooms and shared living areas separate.

The OOA room supports overnight care and responsive assistance without making the home feel staff-led. Participants can enjoy their own bedrooms, private ensuites and shared living areas, with the reassurance that support is close by when required.

For SIL providers, this creates a practical working environment. The home supports supervision, response and care delivery while still preserving the independence and privacy of each participant.

Outdoor Connection for Fresh Air and Everyday Use

Rear Deck, Ramp Access and Practical Entry Points

The home includes a rear deck connected to the living area, with ramp access that helps make the outdoor space more usable. This gives participants a comfortable way to enjoy fresh air, spend time outside or move between indoor and outdoor areas with support.

The front porch and garage also add practical entry options. These areas help support everyday arrivals, departures, appointments and support worker access.

The external areas are designed with accessibility in mind, including step-free movement, suitable transition points and slip-resistant access surfaces. This helps make outdoor movement safer and more practical for participants who use mobility aids or need physical support.

Designed Around High Physical Support

Accessibility Included from the Start

90 Mercer Street has been assessed at final-as-built stage under the High Physical Support design category. The home includes three High Physical Support participant bedrooms, a dedicated OOA room and support-ready design features throughout.

The accessibility features are built into the home rather than added later. The design includes step-free access, wide doorways, accessible kitchen features, accessible bathrooms, slip-resistant flooring, consistent switch and power-point heights, reverse-cycle air-conditioning to living areas and bedrooms, internet and Wi-Fi coverage, participant-to-support communication systems, emergency power solutions and future ceiling hoist capability.

These features help participants live with greater comfort and control, while also giving SIL providers a home that supports safe, efficient and responsive care. The result is a practical, durable and participant-friendly home that balances independence with the right level of support.
